Guatemala Hotels – Where To Stay in Guatemala

Hotel in Guatemala

As specialists in travel to Guatemala, we offer our clients hotel options right across the country.

In the key visitor destinations, especially in Antigua, there is plenty of choice and something to suit most tastes and budgets.

In other parts of Guatemala, some quite surprising, hotel options are much more limited both in terms of quantity and quality. For certain destinations and itineraries, visitors may have to temper their expectations and simply accept the reality of what is currently available.

Below, we have provided a summary of the hotel situation in Guatemala’s key tourist destinations as well as some of those that are definitely off the beaten track.

Please note that just because we don’t list a hotel doesn’t mean we don’t work with it. If there is a particular hotel that you wish to stay at, but you don’t see any mention of it, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Finally, please note that many of the most popular hotels in Guatemala book up a long way in advance, especially during high season. If you are particular about your accommodation, we suggest you book as far in advance as possible.

Where To Stay in Antigua

As the most visited destination in Guatemala, Antigua also has a wide range of hotel accommodation to choose from, the vast majority of it small-scale and atmospheric, just the way we like it. Of course, one small drawback with small-scale hotels, especially the most popular ones, is that they often book up quite a long way in advance.

When it comes to location, Antigua is a very compact town so, no matter where you stay, pretty much everything is within walking distance.

Where To Stay in Lake Atitlan

Hotel overlooking Lake Atitlan

After Antigua, Lake Atitlan is probably the second most visited destination in Guatemala although much of the accommodation on offer is more budget orientated and / or aimed at young and long stay guests, often those studying or volunteering.

Unlike Antigua, hotels at Lake Atitlan are also much more spread out although the majority of our recommended hotels are clustered around Panajachel on the lake’s northern shore.

Where To Stay in Chichicastenango

Chichicastenango is famous for its twice-weekly traditional market (every Thursday & Sunday) and is one of the most popular highlights of any holiday to Guatemala.

However, because the market only takes place twice a week, and because of its relatively convenient location, the majority of visitors to Chichicastenango simply pass through town and don’t require any accommodation. For this reason, hotels in Chichicastenango are limited in number and quality.

For those with the time, overnighting in Chichicastenango offers visitors the chance to either arrive the night before and be in-situ to see the market coming to life in the morning or the option of staying on after the market winds down and not having to rush off somewhere else.

Where To Stay in Quetzaltenango

Hotel in Quetzaltenango

Despite being the second largest city in Guatemala, and with plenty to see both in town and the surrounding countryside, hotels in Quetzaltenango are noticeable by their limitations.

While there aren’t currently any luxurious hotels on offer, Quetzaltenango does offer pleasant, comfortable, broadly atmospheric hotels and availability is seldom a problem.

Where To Stay in Flores & Lake Peten

Hotel Isla de Flores Guatemala

As the largest town in Guatemala’s vast, northern Peten province, Flores acts as a base for exploring the surrounding region including its numerous Mayan sites.

As well as spattering of hotels in the town of Flores, including on the wonderfully picturesque Isla de Flores, there are also a number of other hotel options dotted around the surrounding countryside, a potentially preferable option for those who prefer the peace and quiet of their largely unspoiled rural surroundings and lakeside settings.

Where To Stay in Tikal

Tikal Lodge Hotel

Of course, very, very few visitors to Guatemala make the journey to Peten province and don’t visit the world-famous Mayan site of Tikal.

While it is possible to base oneself in Flores etc and visit Tikal on a day trip, some visitors enjoy being able to stay within walking distance of the Park entrance and perhaps spending a bit longer exploring the atmospheric ruins.

Where To Stay in Livingston

Hotel in Livingtston, Guatemala

Acting as either the start or finish to the spectacular boat journey along the Rio Dulce, Livingston is also notable as being a bastion of Garifuna culture, not to mention fun place to break one’s journey for a couple of nights.

In keeping with its slightly rakish, sleepy feel, hotels in Livingston are thin on the ground and service is generally very relaxed.
